This post shows full solutions to Volume Shadow Copy Service error in windows that may appear when backing up files or system with Windows built-in tool.
When it comes to Volume Shadow Copy Service, you should know it refers to a technology in Windows to make automatic or manual backups or snapshots of the volumes or files of the computer. It is also called Volume Snapshot Service, or VSS.
By using this service, you can create scheduled backups, or automatic system restore points to protect the system safety.
However, all Windows components depending on this service will be not working if it is stopped. When backing up or restoring the Windows system, some Volume Shadow Copy Service errors happen on Windows 10/8/7 computer. The how-to-tutorial will show some solutions to fix VSS errors.
How to Fix Windows 10/8/7 Shadow Copy Errors
Different Windows systems and cases, VSS errors will vary. Let’s learn about some common mistakes as well as solutions from the following part.
Situation 1: When Backing up OS or Files, Volume Copy Service Is Not Working
When you create a system image or back up files, you may experience VSS error code 0x80042302 or 0x807800A1. The following are the specific solutions to Volume Shadow Copy Service not working based on different errors.
① Volume Shadow Copy Service Error 0x80042302
If Windows says “The backup application could not start due to an internal error: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an expected error…”, it is likely that this service is disabled.
To fix error 0x80042302, you can type services.msc in the Run dialog to enter service window. Then, find Volume Shadow Copy and set its Startup type to Automatic. Besides, set the Service status to Started.
② A Volume Shadow Copy Service Operation Failed 0x807800A1
If you create a system image, the error code 0x807800A1 & 0x800423F4 may happen, as shown below:
Some reasons like stopped VSS, antivirus or Windows firewall or hard drive errors may give rise to this Volume Shadow Copy Service error. The solutions are also simple.
Way 1: Enable Volume Shadow Copy Service
Similarly, you also need to enter services interface, find Volume Shadow Copy and set it to Automatic. If this service is stopped or paused, you need to let it start.
Next, go to the Dependencies tab to check the services required for VSS to run. Finally, make all changes effective.
Way 2: Disable Antivirus and Windows Firewall
To fix Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed issue, you can temporarily disable antivirus program and Windows Firewall.
To disable antivirus, you can right-click this app and choose Disable.
To disable Windows Firewall, navigate to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall to choose to Turn Windows firewall on off and tick Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended).
Way 3: Check Hard Drive Errors
To get out of VSS error trouble, you can use CHKDSK command to check the errors on the hard drive. If it finds some errors, this tool will fix them. Then, you can back up the Windows without the error.
Situation 2: When Restoring System, Volume Shadow Copy Service Errors Occur
When performing a system restore, you may experience two common VSS errors like 0x81000202 and 0x80042302.
① Volume Shadow Copy Service Error 0x81000202
Sometimes the error message “The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working” appears on the screen, as shown in the following figure.
To fix this issue, you can change System Restore settings. Just open the Run dialog, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter, go to Computer Configuration\Administrative Template\System\System Restore. Then, change the Turn off System Restore policy to Not configured.
The second way is to perform an SFC scan by using SFC /scannow command to restore corrupted Windows files for issue fix.
② System Restore Volume Shadow Copy Service Error 0x80042302
“System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system. A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error… (0x80042302)” message appears on the screen? Just find ways to fix it.
To get rid of this issue, you also need to set Volume Shadow Copy Service to Automatic and Run SFC. The specific steps have been mentioned above, thus, here I won’t repeat.
Also, to perform a clean boot will be helpful. To do this, go to Run and type msconfig.exe to open System Configuration. Then, uncheck Load startup items under the General tab. Under the Service tab, tick Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all. Finally, make them useful.
Use Shadow Copy Service Alternative software to Back up Windows
Fixing Windows 7/8/10 Shadow Copy errors is a bit troublesome, and some of you are looking for an alternative to back up Windows system and files without encountering any VSS error.
Here, I suggest using free backup software for Windows 10/8/7, MiniTool ShadowMaker. It can back up Windows, files, disk or partition automatically. Besides, incremental and differential backup is supported.
Once you download, install and launch it, you can go to the Backup page, choose the backup source (back up the system by default) and destination, and start a backup by clicking Back up Now button. The operations are relatively simple.
